The story of the piece

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton Monogram silk pochette

The story of Louis Vuitton begins in 1854 in Paris, when Louis Vuitton opened his first atelier specialising in travel trunks. In an era when train and ship travel were revolutionising Europe, Vuitton introduced a practical and ingenious innovation: flat-topped, lightweight, and stackable trunks lined in waterproof canvas. A simple idea that changed the concept of luxury luggage forever.

Success was rapid. In 1896, his son Georges created the famous Monogram featuring the LV initials and floral motifs, to counter imitations and make the brand instantly recognisable. This gave rise to icons such as the Speedy and the Keepall, symbols of elegance and functionality.

Throughout the twentieth century, Louis Vuitton expanded globally, becoming synonymous with French luxury. In 1987, it joined the LVMH group, consolidating its position in the international market.

A key moment arrived in 1997 with the appointment of Marc Jacobs as creative director, who introduced prêt-à-porter and launched innovative artistic collaborations. In the following years, designers such as Nicolas Ghesquière and Virgil Abloh reinterpreted the maison's heritage with a contemporary vision.

Today, Louis Vuitton represents the perfect balance between artisanal tradition and innovation, remaining one of the most influential and coveted fashion brands in the world.
