The story of the piece
Gucci
Gucci striped wool scarf
The history of Gucci began in 1921 in Florence, when Guccio Gucci opened a small shop selling leather goods and luggage. After working as a porter at the Hotel Savoy in London, Guccio was fascinated by the elegance of the international aristocracy and decided to bring that refined style to Italy, blending it with the excellence of Tuscan craftsmanship.
During the 1930s and 1940s, the brand grew rapidly. Due to sanctions and material shortages during World War II, Gucci demonstrated great creativity, using hemp, linen, and bamboo. It was during this period that the famous Bamboo bag was born, destined to become a timeless icon. In the post-war era, the company expanded internationally, opening boutiques in Rome, Milan, and New York, and winning over Hollywood stars and members of high society.
The 1950s and 1960s represent the brand's golden age: symbols such as the horsebit loafer, the green-red-green ribbon, and the GG monogram were born. However, after Guccio's death and the company's transition to his children and grandchildren, family conflicts emerged, leading to disorganized management and a progressive decline in the 1980s.
The turning point came in the 1990s, when the brand was restructured and relaunched thanks to a new creative and managerial vision. Gucci regained its prestige by blending tradition and provocation, luxury and modernity. In the following years, several creative directors contributed to redefining its identity, making it increasingly recognizable and influential in the global fashion landscape.
Today, Gucci is one of the most famous luxury brands in the world, a symbol of Italian style, innovation, and the ability to reinvent itself, while remaining faithful to its artisanal roots and its century-old history.
