The story of the piece

Gucci

Gucci Zippy Bengal Monogram canvas and leather wallet

The story of Gucci began in 1921 in Florence, when Guccio Gucci founded a small boutique specializing in the production of leather goods and travel accessories. Before opening his shop, Guccio had worked in luxury hotels in London and Paris, where he closely observed the style and elegance of the international aristocracy. This experience inspired him to create refined products that combined Italian craftsmanship with cosmopolitan taste.

In the 1930s, the brand began to grow and distinguished itself through the quality of its materials and attention to detail. During the Second World War, due to the scarcity of raw materials, Gucci experimented with alternative materials such as canvas and bamboo. This led to the creation of the famous bamboo handle bag, destined to become one of the maison's icons.

In the post-war period, Gucci experienced rapid international expansion. In the 1950s and 1960s, boutiques were opened in Rome, Milan, New York, and Beverly Hills. Gucci's creations won over celebrities and members of the international jet set. During this period, iconic brand symbols were born, such as the horsebit, the green-red-green web, and the double G monogram, which references the founder's initials.

In the 1980s, the company went through a period of difficulty due to family conflicts and complex brand management. The turning point came in the 1990s with a profound corporate reorganization and the arrival of creative director Tom Ford, who completely renewed the fashion house's image, introducing a sensual, modern, and glamorous style.

Over the years, Gucci has continued to evolve under different creative directions, always maintaining a strong link to Italian artisanal tradition. Today, the brand is part of the Kering group and is considered one of the most influential luxury brands in the world, capable of uniting heritage, innovation, and creativity in the contemporary fashion landscape.
