The story of the piece
Burberry
The Burberry Kensington cotton trench is the model that made the maison's silhouette recognizable, with its double-breasted line and waist belt.
The history of the Burberry Kensington trench
The Kensington was born as an evolution of the classic trench, a garment that Burberry developed throughout the 1900s starting from the Trench Coat introduced during the First World War. The name Kensington recalls the London district and identifies one of the maison's most famous lines, characterized by a regular fit and balanced proportions.
The model is recognizable by its double-breasted design, collar with storm flap, epaulettes, and the belt that defines the waist. The cotton gabardine version, the fabric that Thomas Burberry patented in 1879, maintains the typical compactness and durability of the garment. Over the years, the Burberry Kensington trench has remained one of the most sought-after models, also for its ability to adapt to both formal and informal settings. The line has seen various interpretations, but the cotton model with classic finishes remains the benchmark of Burberry production.
The Burberry maison
Burberry was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, England. The company initially established itself in the production of gabardine garments, the waterproof fabric that the founder himself developed and patented in 1879.
In 1914, Burberry supplied trench coats to British army officers, and from that moment, the garment became a permanent part of the collective imagination. The check pattern, known as Burberry Check, was introduced in the 1920s as the inner lining of the trenches and later became a distinctive hallmark of the maison.
In 2006, Angela Ahrendts took the helm of the company and began a repositioning process, while Christopher Bailey, who joined Burberry in 2001, became creative director in 2009 and led the maison until 2018. The Kensington trench belongs to this tradition and represents one of its most recognizable expressions.
