The story of the piece

Hermès

Hermès silk Carré Polo Cup Palm Beach

Hermes is one of the most important deities in Greek mythology. The son of Zeus, king of the gods, and the nymph Maia, he was born in a cave on Mount Cillene, in Arcadia. From his very first day, he showed extraordinary intelligence and great cunning. According to myth, as soon as he was born, he left his cradle and stole some herds of cattle belonging to Apollo. To avoid being discovered, he made the animals walk backwards, thereby confusing their tracks.

During this adventure, Hermes also built the first lyre using a tortoise shell and strings made from animal intestines. When Apollo discovered the theft, he became angry and brought Hermes before Zeus. The young god, with his eloquence, managed to defend himself and eventually gifted the lyre to Apollo, who was enchanted by its sound. The two reconciled and became friends.

Hermes became the official messenger of the gods of Olympus. He wore winged sandals and a winged helmet, which allowed him to travel swiftly between the sky, the earth, and the underworld. He carried the caduceus, a staff with two entwined serpents, a symbol of peace, commerce, and communication.

In addition to being the messenger of the gods, Hermes was the protector of travelers, merchants, athletes, and even thieves, thanks to his cunning. He also had the task of accompanying the souls of the deceased to the underworld, guiding them to the realm of Hades.
