The story of the piece
Hermès
Hermès silk Carré Les Ameriques
The history of Hermès, one of the most iconic French luxury maisons, began in 1837, when Thierry Hermès founded a workshop in Paris specializing in high-quality harnesses and saddles for horses. Initially catering to a European aristocratic clientele, the brand quickly gained a reputation for its artisanal excellence.
Hermès silk Carré Les Ameriques At the end of the 19th century, the second generation of the family introduced new leather goods and bags for equestrian use, paving the way for the brand's transformation into a leather goods maison. In the 1920s, under the leadership of Émile-Maurice Hermès, the company expanded into clothing and accessories, introducing the famous zip, an absolute novelty in France at the time.
In 1935, the legendary Kelly bag (made famous by Grace Kelly) was born, followed in 1984 by the Birkin, created for Jane Birkin and destined to become a global icon. In addition to accessories, Hermès is also renowned for its silk carrés, launched in 1937, which combine art, history, and fashion in a single object.
From the 1950s onwards, Hermès established itself as a symbol of timeless luxury, thanks to an approach that prioritizes quality, tradition, and discretion. Under the leadership of Jean-Louis Dumas from 1978, the brand internationalized and expanded its collections while maintaining artisanal production.
Today, Hermès is a global maison, active in leather goods, prêt-à-porter, perfumery, home decor, and watchmaking. True to its motto “le chic discret”, it continues to embody an idea of sustainable luxury, made of noble materials, impeccable craftsmanship, and an aesthetic that stands the test of time. The horse-drawn carriage emblem remains a tribute to its origins and its artisanal excellence.
