The story of the piece

Gucci

Gucci braided leather belt

The story of Gucci began in 1921, when Guccio Gucci founded a small boutique in Florence specializing in luxury leather goods and luggage. Inspired by the elegance of the travelers he observed while working at the Savoy Hotel in London, Guccio decided to create products that combined Tuscan craftsmanship and international style.

In the 1930s and 40s, due to economic difficulties and trade sanctions, Gucci introduced alternative materials such as braided hemp and bamboo, which led to the creation of the famous Bamboo Bag, still an icon of the brand today. After World War II, the company expanded and opened boutiques in Rome, Milan, and later in New York, becoming a symbol of Made in Italy.

In the 1950s and 60s, under the leadership of Guccio's sons, the brand achieved worldwide fame: the “GG” pattern (the founder's initials) and the green-red-green ribbon became recognizable emblems everywhere. Celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, and Grace Kelly helped strengthen Gucci's image as a synonym of elegance and sophisticated luxury.

In the 1980s and 90s, however, the maison went through a severe family and financial crisis. Internal management and overproduction weakened the brand's image. The turning point came with the arrival of Tom Ford in 1994, who revitalized Gucci with a sexy, provocative, and modern style, bringing it back to the center of international fashion.

In the new millennium, under the creative direction of designers such as Frida Giannini and, from 2015 to 2022, Alessandro Michele, the brand renewed its identity with an eclectic, romantic, and gender-fluid aesthetic, while maintaining its connection to artisanal tradition. Today Gucci, part of the Kering group, is one of the most influential luxury brands in the world, a symbol of innovation, creativity, and timeless Italian identity.
