The history of Chanel is one of the most fascinating in French luxury, founded on the innovative and rebellious vision of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. Born in 1883 in Saumur, France, Coco grew up in an orphanage after the death of her mother and abandonment by her father. It was here that she learned to sew, developing extraordinary tailoring skills. In the early 1920s, she opened her first boutique in Paris, offering simple and elegant hats that challenged the ornamental excesses of the era.

Success arrived quickly thanks to the creation of iconic pieces that redefined the female wardrobe: the little black dress of 1926, the tweed suit, and unstructured jackets. Coco revolutionized fashion by introducing comfort and sobriety, liberating women from corsets and bulky dresses, and creating an elegant yet practical style, always using precious materials and refined cuts.
In the 1920s and '30s, Chanel also launched the famous Chanel N°5 fragrance, which became a global symbol of luxury and femininity. During the Second World War, the maison temporarily closed, but in 1954 Coco returned triumphantly with new collections, consolidating the myth of the Chanel suit and the quilted bag with a gold chain.
After her death in 1971, the Maison continued to grow thanks to visionary designers, including Karl Lagerfeld, who from 1983 to 2019 modernized the Chanel style while remaining faithful to tradition. Today, under the creative direction of Virginie Viard, Chanel represents a symbol of timeless elegance, innovation, and sophisticated luxury, continuing to influence global fashion with pieces, accessories, and fragrances that embody the legend of Coco Chanel.
