The story of the piece
Cartier
Cartier Santos de Cartier ballpoint pen
Cartier was founded in 1847 in Paris, when Louis-François Cartier took over his master's workshop, creating a maison destined to become one of the absolute symbols of luxury jewelry and watchmaking. From the very beginning, Cartier has stood out for the impeccable quality of its creations, its attention to detail, and its ability to combine technical innovation with aesthetic refinement.
International growth was achieved thanks to the founder's three grandsons—Louis, Pierre, and Jacques—who brought Cartier to London and New York at the beginning of the 20th century, transforming it into a global brand. During this period, some of the maison's most iconic creations were born. In 1904, Louis Cartier created one of the first men's wristwatches, the Santos, for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, destined to become a classic. In 1917, the Tank was introduced, inspired by French tanks from World War I, a model that would become an icon worn by artists, royals, and celebrities.
Cartier also excels in jewelry: the Panthère figure, which became a symbol of the maison, was born in the 1940s thanks to Jeanne Toussaint, creative director and muse of the brand. In the following years came collections destined to make history, such as the Love Bracelet, the Juste un Clou, and the Panthère de Cartier, creations that blend modern design and artisanal mastery.
Throughout the 20th century, Cartier consolidated its prestige by becoming the “jeweler of kings and king of jewelers,” collaborating with royal families, great personalities, and entertainment icons. Having joined the Richemont group, the maison continues to expand while preserving tradition and investing in innovation.
