The history of Balenciaga is that of one of the most influential and revolutionary maison in fashion. Founded in 1917 by Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga in San Sebastián, the house moved to Paris in 1937, where it quickly conquered the couture elite. Known as the “master of masters” by designers such as Dior and Chanel, Balenciaga is famous for its architectural shapes, tailoring precision and the ability to redefine the female body through garment structure.
Balenciaga X Adidas Speed technical fabric sneakers In the '50s and '60s, Balenciaga revolutionized the female silhouette by introducing innovative lines such as the sack dress, the baby doll, the tunic and the collarless vest. Her creations, free from superfluous ornamentation, exalt the idea of purity and modernity. The most famous clients — including Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly — made it an icon of absolute elegance. However, in 1968, disappointed by the increasing commercialization of fashion, Balenciaga closed the maison and retired, passing away four years later.
The brand was relaunched in the '80s and '90s, and in 1997 with Nicolas Ghesquière returned to the center of the scene with an innovative and futuristic approach. Ghesquière reinterpreted the founder's legacy with sculptural volumes and technological materials.
In 2015, Demna Gvasalia became creative director and brought Balenciaga into a new era. Under his guidance, the maison blends streetwear, tailoring and conceptual experimentation, challenging the conventions of traditional fashion.
