The story of the piece
Balenciaga
Balenciaga Speed Trainer sneakers
Balenciaga is one of the most influential and revolutionary fashion maisons of the 20th and 21st centuries. Founded in 1917 in San Sebastián, Spain, by designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, the brand moved permanently to Paris in 1937 due to the Spanish Civil War. Balenciaga was immediately acclaimed as a haute couture master for his sartorial precision, innovative silhouettes, and sculptural approach to fashion.
In the '50s and '60s, Cristóbal Balenciaga redefined the concept of elegance, introducing radically new shapes such as the tunic dress, the balloon dress, and the sack line, which profoundly influenced the design of the era. Coco Chanel called him "the true couturier," recognizing his incredible technical skill. In 1968, Balenciaga closed the maison and retired, leaving a legacy of revolutionary elegance.
The brand was relaunched in the '90s and experienced a significant revival under the creative direction of Nicolas Ghesquière from 1997 to 2012, who fused the brand's heritage with a futuristic and experimental aesthetic.
In 2015, the arrival of Demna (Gvasalia) as creative director marked a new turning point. With a provocative and conceptual approach, Demna redefined Balenciaga through a streetwear and post-modern lens, playing with oversized proportions, irony, and an anti-conventional aesthetic. Under his guidance, the brand achieved enormous cultural resonance, becoming one of the most discussed and influential names in contemporary fashion.
Today, Balenciaga continues to innovate, blending high fashion and pop culture, provocation and sophistication, with collections that challenge the rules of taste and luxury. The maison remains faithful to the subversive spirit of its founder, constantly redefining the very concept of fashion.
