The story of the piece
Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton Emelie Monogram canvas and leather wallet
Louis Vuitton was founded in 1854 in Paris, when Louis Vuitton Malletier, a young artisan skilled in woodworking and trunk making, opened his first atelier on Rue Neuve-des-Capucines. In an era when the art of travel was evolving rapidly, Vuitton revolutionized the sector by introducing the flat-top trunk, which was lighter, more resistant, and easier to stack than the domed models in use at the time. The impeccable quality of the materials and the functional design made his trunks an immediate success.
At the end of the 19th century, to distinguish himself from increasingly widespread imitations, his son Georges Vuitton created the famous Monogram canvas in 1896, featuring the LV initials and floral motifs inspired by Art Nouveau. This pattern became one of the most recognizable symbols in the world and inaugurated the era of the maison's visual identity.
During the 20th century, Louis Vuitton expanded its product range to include luggage, handbags, and luxury accessories. The brand continued to grow, becoming a benchmark for elegant travel and French craftsmanship. In 1987, the LVMH group was formed, uniting Louis Vuitton with Moët & Chandon and Hennessy, paving the way for unprecedented global growth.
The contemporary turning point arrived in 1997 with Marc Jacobs, the first creative director to develop a prêt-à-porter line. His artistic collaborations with Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami, and Yayoi Kusama reinvented the monogram, transforming it into a pop icon.
In 2013, Nicolas Ghesquière took over the creative direction of the women's line, bringing a futuristic and architectural aesthetic. In the menswear sector, the arrival of Virgil Abloh in 2018 marked a historic moment, merging luxury with street culture.
