The story of the piece

Hermès

Hermès leather and satin metal belt

Hermes is one of the most versatile and fascinating deities in Greek mythology. Son of Zeus and the nymph Maia, he was born in a cave on Mount Cillene in Arcadia. From infancy, he demonstrated extraordinary ingenuity: on his first day of life, he stole a herd of cattle from Apollo and, to avoid detection, walked backward, creating deceptive footprints. When Apollo discovered him, Hermes convinced him with his eloquence and gifted him the first lyre, which he had built from a tortoise shell. Impressed by his half-brother's wit, Apollo took him to Zeus, who forgave him and made him the messenger of the gods.

Hermès leather and satin metal belt Hermes thus became the god of travelers, merchants, thieves, and communication. He was known for his speed: he wore winged sandals and carried the caduceus, a magic staff with two intertwined serpents. His task was to carry messages between the gods and between gods and men, as well as to accompany the souls of the dead to the Underworld.

His figure embodies intelligence, cunning, and movement. He was not just a fast god, but also a mediator, capable of crossing boundaries—physical, moral, or divine. He helped Persephone return to her mother Demeter, guided Odysseus and Proserpina, and was often by the side of heroes and deities.

Over time, Hermes was identified with the Roman god Mercury, retaining much of his characteristics. Even today, his symbol and figure are linked to communication, speed, and commerce, making him one of the most contemporary and beloved deities of classical mythology.
