The story of the piece
Gianni Versace
Gianni Versace Vogue print silk top
Gianni Versace was founded in 1978 in Milan by the Calabrian stylist Gianni Versace, one of the most innovative and revolutionary designers in Italian fashion. Born in Reggio Calabria in 1946, Gianni grew up in his mother's tailoring shop, where from a young age he developed a deep knowledge of fabrics, cutting, and craftsmanship. After several collaborations with major Italian fashion companies in the 1970s, he decided to create a personal brand capable of expressing luxury, sensuality, and creative audacity.
From its very first collections, Versace has stood out for a glamorous and theatrical style characterized by vibrant colors, baroque prints, metallic details, and sensual silhouettes. The Medusa symbol, inspired by Greek mythology and the classical art of Magna Graecia, became the maison's iconic logo, representing charm and seductive power.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Gianni Versace transformed the brand into an international phenomenon. His creations were worn by music, cinema, and fashion stars, contributing to the birth of the modern supermodel concept. Versace collaborated with legendary models such as Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, and Cindy Crawford, turning fashion shows into true media spectacles.
The maison rapidly expanded its offering to include haute couture, accessories, fragrances, home decor, and lines dedicated to men and women. The Versace style became synonymous with elegant excess, Mediterranean luxury, and a strong aesthetic identity.
After the tragic passing of Gianni Versace in 1997, creative direction passed to his sister Donatella Versace, who continues to honor the founder's legacy by reinterpreting it through a contemporary lens. Today, Versace remains one of the most iconic and recognizable brands in international luxury.
