Comme des Garçons

Comme des Garçons is a brand founded in 1973 by Rei Kawakubo. A self-taught designer, she is ranked alongside Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto among the stylists who exported Japanese style to the West in the '70s and '80s. Since her very first runway show, she has sparked scandal and criticism with garments that dismantle every prevailing ideal of beauty, sensuality, and femininity. Today, her avant-garde brand is globally recognized for the epochal shift it brought to the fashion world, serving as one of the ultimate examples of '90s minimalist aesthetics. Rooted in irreverence and intellectualism, her work stems from a rigorous and counter-trend analysis of femininity, and a long, meticulous study of the stylistic tropes that define the female form. Linked to the designer's aesthetic are, in addition to the celebration of black, minimalism and the study of volumes, where the sartorial wardrobe is dismantled and then reconstructed by changing the rules of wearability.
