Balenciaga is one of the most influential and innovative maisons in fashion history, internationally recognized for its sartorial excellence and avant-garde design. Founded in 1917 in San Sebastián, Spain, by designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, the fashion house quickly conquered the Spanish aristocracy thanks to the quality of its creations and the extraordinary precision of its craftsmanship. Considered one of the greatest couturiers of the 20th century, Balenciaga was famous for his ability to innovate without ever sacrificing technical perfection.
In 1937, due to the Spanish Civil War, Cristóbal Balenciaga moved the maison to Paris, where he opened his haute couture atelier. Here, he revolutionized the couture landscape by introducing innovative silhouettes, architectural volumes, and essential lines that redefined the concept of feminine elegance. His creations, characterized by sculptural shapes and impeccable construction, deeply influenced international fashion. Designers such as Christian Dior and Coco Chanel admired his talent, calling him one of the greatest masters of haute couture.
In the fifties and sixties, Balenciaga presented models destined to become iconic, such as the sack dress, the baby doll dress, the balloon coat, and tunic silhouettes. His continuous search for new proportions and volumes anticipated many of the trends that would characterize contemporary fashion. In 1968, Cristóbal Balenciaga decided to close the maison, believing that the evolution of the sector was no longer compatible with his vision of haute couture.
After the brand's relaunch in the nineties, Balenciaga returned to a leading role in the international luxury landscape.
