The story of the piece

Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent Tribute sandals

Yves Saint Laurent, born on August 1st, 1936, in Oran, Algeria, was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. From a young age, he showed extraordinary talent for fashion, moving to Paris in 1953 to attend the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture. There, he was noticed by Michel de Brunhoff, editor of Vogue France, who introduced him to Christian Dior.

In 1955, Saint Laurent began working as Dior's assistant and, upon the master's death in 1957, became his successor at only 21 years old. His first collection for Dior, the “Trapeze” line, was a resounding success. However, in 1960, he was called to serve in the Algerian War, an event that profoundly marked his life.

In 1961, together with his partner Pierre Bergé, he founded his fashion house, Yves Saint Laurent YSL. His first collection, presented in 1962, consolidated his status as an innovator. Throughout the 1960s and '70s, Saint Laurent revolutionized fashion with creations such as the “women's tuxedo” (1966), the “safari jacket,” and the “beatnik” look. He was also the first designer to use Black models on the runway and to introduce the concept of prêt-à-porter with the Rive Gauche line.

Saint Laurent was a pioneer in weaving fashion and art together, drawing inspiration from great painters such as Mondrian and Van Gogh. However, his personal life was marked by depression and addiction, despite his continuous professional success. In 1998, he retired from prêt-à-porter, but continued to work on haute couture until 2002.

After his retirement, the maison Saint Laurent continued to influence fashion under the direction of designers such as Tom Ford, Stefano Pilati, and Hedi Slimane. Yves Saint Laurent died on June 1st, 2008, in Paris, leaving an indelible legacy in the fashion world, with creations that redefined the female wardrobe and symbolized women's empowerment.
