The story of the piece

Saint Laurent

Saint Laurent logo cotton T-shirt

Yves Saint Laurent, born in 1936 in Oran, Algeria, was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. He began his fashion career at a very young age, moving to Paris at 17. After winning a competition for young designers, he was noticed by Christian Dior and became his assistant. Upon Dior's death in 1957, Saint Laurent, at only 21 years old, was appointed creative director of the maison.

The first collection was an immediate success. Saint Laurent revolutionized fashion by proposing an elegant yet modern style, inspired as much by art as by pop culture. Among his most iconic creations are the “Le Smoking” women's tuxedo (1966), the safari jacket, the couture-inspired trench coat, and dresses inspired by Mondrian's paintings.

He was among the first to bring prêt-à-porter to the haute couture runways, democratizing elegance and dressing strong, independent, and sophisticated women. His style merged masculine and feminine, sensuality and rigor, becoming a symbol of female empowerment.

Saint Laurent retired in 2002. He passed away in 2008, but his legacy continues. In 2012, the maison was relaunched by Hedi Slimane, who renamed it Saint Laurent and gave it a more rock and androgynous edge. Today, under the creative direction of Anthony Vaccarello, Saint Laurent remains a global fashion benchmark, maintaining the provocative, elegant, and innovative DNA of its founder.

The story of Saint Laurent is the story of a visionary who radically transformed the way fashion interprets identity, power, and freedom.
