The story of the piece
Gucci
Gucci Aphrodite Media leather shoulder bag
Gucci was founded in 1921 in Florence by Guccio Gucci, who, after working in hotels in London and Paris, became fascinated by the elegance of high-society travelers. Upon returning to Italy, he opened a leather goods shop where he combined Tuscan craftsmanship with cosmopolitan inspirations. From its early days, references to the equestrian world — such as the bit, the green-red-green stripe and subsequently the GG canvas — became distinctive symbols of the maison.
In the '50s and '60s, under the leadership of Guccio's children, the brand experienced extraordinary expansion. Boutiques opened in New York and other capitals, while Hollywood and the international jet set fell in love with the brand. Timeless icons were born, such as the Bamboo bag, the bit loafer and the Jackie bag, which consolidated Gucci as an emblem of Italian luxury.
The '80s were marked by family tensions and management difficulties, but the rebirth arrived in the '90s with the arrival of Tom Ford. Appointed creative director in 1994, Ford revolutionized Gucci's image with a sensual, glamorous, and provocative style, bringing the maison back to the pinnacle of international fashion.
In 2006, the direction passed to Frida Giannini, who reinterpreted historical codes with a more romantic and refined aesthetic. The subsequent transformation arrived in 2015 with Alessandro Michele, who completely reinvented the brand's identity: a maximalist, eclectic, cultured, and vintage-pop universe that captured a global audience.
Since 2023, the maison has been led by Sabato De Sarno, who introduces a more essential, modern, and sensual vision, opening a new chapter in the brand's history.
