The company was founded in 1910 by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who opened her first hat shop in Paris. Thanks to her creative talent and revolutionary vision, Coco Chanel transformed the way women dressed, proposing a simple, refined, and comfortable style, in contrast to the rigid fashion of the era.
In the 1920s, Chanel became famous for her clothing collections characterized by essential lines and innovative fabrics such as jersey, which until then had been used mainly for menswear. In 1921, she launched the fragrance Chanel N°5, destined to become one of the most famous and best-selling fragrances in the world. Its elegant design and the quality of its composition helped make it a timeless icon.
In 1955, Coco Chanel introduced the 2.55 bag, recognizable by its chain strap and characteristic matelassé quilting. Even today, it remains one of the most coveted models in the luxury world. Another iconic piece of the maison is the tweed suit, which combines elegance, practicality, and femininity.
After the death of Coco Chanel in 1971, the brand went through a period of change. In 1983, the creative direction was entrusted to Karl Lagerfeld, who relaunched the maison by reinterpreting its stylistic codes in a modern way. Since 2019, the artistic direction of the fashion collections has been entrusted to Virginie Viard, who has continued the work by enhancing the founder's legacy.
