The story of the piece
Chanel
Chanel In The Business Flap matelassé leather bag
Chanel was born from the revolutionary intuition of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who radically transformed the idea of femininity at the beginning of the 20th century. After opening a hat boutique in Paris in 1910, Coco expanded her vision to Deauville and Biarritz, proposing a new style based on comfort, simplicity, and freedom of movement, in stark contrast to the rigid and decorative garments of the era. Her linear silhouettes, inspired by menswear, quickly won over a sophisticated clientele.
The 1920s marked the beginning of Chanel's iconicity: the little black dress was born, a symbol of essential elegance, along with the tweed suit, destined to become a pillar of the maison, and above all, the Chanel N°5 fragrance (1921), the first to use an abstract bouquet and one of the most famous ever. Chanel also introduced the use of jersey in women's fashion, making materials previously used for sportswear part of high elegance.
After the closure of boutiques during the Second World War, Coco Chanel made a triumphant return in 1954, redesigning the modern wardrobe with the tweed suit, bags with a leather-intertwined chain, and the iconic beige and black bicolor. Her aesthetic remained focused on clean lines, practicality, and sophistication.
Upon Coco's death in 1971, the maison entered a quieter phase until the arrival of Karl Lagerfeld in 1983. Lagerfeld reinterpreted Chanel's codes with creativity and irony, transforming the house into an international giant and making tweed, pearls, chains, and the double C global symbols of contemporary luxury.
Since 2019, Virginie Viard has led the creative direction, maintaining Chanel's heritage of modern elegance with a more delicate and sartorial approach.
