The story of the piece
Balenciaga
Balenciaga BB Knife Scottish tweed ballerinas
Balenciaga was founded in 1917 by Cristóbal Balenciaga, born in a small town in the Basque Country and considered one of the greatest couturiers of the 20th century. After successfully opening his first boutiques in Spain, he moved to Paris in 1937, where he inaugurated the maison that would soon become an absolute benchmark in haute couture.
Balenciaga is distinguished by a sculptural and architectural approach to clothing: it does not follow trends, it anticipates them. Its silhouettes, such as the tunic dress, the sack dress, cocoon coats, and the baby doll, revolutionized fashion, introducing pure volumes and minimalist lines that focus on the structure of the garment. His contemporaries admired him with devotion: Coco Chanel defined him as "the only true couturier," while Christian Dior considered him an unsurpassed master.
After the closing of the maison in 1968 and the death of the founder in 1972, the brand remained silent until the 1990s, when it was relaunched as a contemporary fashion house.
In 2015, Demna Gvasalia took over, once again revolutionizing the brand's identity through oversize proportions, streetwear references, conceptual irony, and a continuous exploration between couture heritage and the urban present. His creations push the boundaries of contemporary fashion and make Balenciaga one of the most discussed and influential maisons of our time.
