The story of the piece
Maison Margiela
Maison Margiela leather wedge ankle boots
Maison Margiela was founded in 1988 in Paris by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, an enigmatic and revolutionary figure in contemporary fashion. Margiela, a former assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier and part of the Antwerp Six, brought a conceptual, intellectual, and deeply anti-system approach to fashion. From the very beginning, the maison has been distinguished by the anonymity of its founder, who refuses interviews and public appearances, letting the garments speak for themselves.
The brand's philosophy is based on the deconstruction and reconstruction of garments: visible seams, linings worn on the outside, unusual materials, oversized silhouettes, and a deliberately imperfect aesthetic. Margiela challenges fashion conventions, redefining the very concept of luxury through conceptual innovation rather than opulence. Even the communication is unique: numbered white labels, a collective creative team, and unconventional runway shows in industrial spaces or on the street.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Maison Margiela established itself as one of the most influential avant-garde brands. The numbered lines—from womenswear to menswear, from the Artisanal line to homeware—create a cohesive and experimental aesthetic language. In 2002, the maison joined Renzo Rosso's OTB group, which supports its global expansion.
In 2009, Martin Margiela quietly left the creative direction, maintaining his mysterious aura. In 2014, the maison entrusted the artistic direction to John Galliano, ushering in a new era. Galliano reinterprets Margiela's codes—anonymity, experimentation, craftsmanship—fusing them with his theatrical and couture sensibility, particularly in the Artisanal collections.
