The story of the piece

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton Monogram canvas and leather Dog Carrier

Louis Vuitton was founded in 1854 in Paris, when Louis Vuitton Malletier, a visionary young artisan, opened his first atelier specializing in travel trunks. In an era of great social and technological transformation, Vuitton revolutionized the art of travel by introducing the flat-top trunk, lightweight, waterproof, and stackable—an absolute innovation compared to traditional domed trunks. The quality of the materials and the precision of the craftsmanship made the brand an immediate synonym for luxury and innovation.

At the end of the 19th century, to distinguish itself from imitations, son Georges Vuitton created the famous Monogram Canvas in 1896, featuring the LV initials and floral motifs inspired by Art Nouveau. This pattern has become one of the most recognizable symbols in global fashion.

Throughout the 20th century, Louis Vuitton expanded its offering and grew globally, always maintaining a strong connection to the spirit of travel. Bags, luggage, and accessories combine functionality, elegance, and exceptional craftsmanship. In 1987, the maison became part of the LVMH group, marking the beginning of a new phase of strategic and creative growth.

The contemporary transformation of the maison occurred with Marc Jacobs, appointed creative director in 1997. With him, Louis Vuitton ready-to-wear was born, alongside iconic artistic collaborations, such as those with Stephen Sprouse and Takashi Murakami, which reinterpreted the monogram in a pop style.

In 2013, the creative direction passed to Nicolas Ghesquière, who brought a futuristic and architectural vision to the women's line. Concurrently, the men's line reached a new level of cultural influence thanks to Virgil Abloh (2018–2021), who fused luxury, streetwear, and innovation.
