At the age of 16, he moved to Paris and began working as an apprentice for a trunk and suitcase maker. Thanks to his craftsmanship, he soon became famous for the quality of his products.
In 1854, he opened his first shop in Paris, introducing a revolution in the world of travel: lightweight, durable trunks with flat lids that could be easily stacked. This innovation, combined with the use of waterproof materials, made his trunks extremely popular among the Parisian elite.
