The story of the piece
Issey Miyake
Issey Miyake optical print pleated maxi cardigan
Issey Miyake (1938–2022) was a visionary Japanese designer, renowned for his ability to merge tradition and innovation. Born in Hiroshima, he survived the 1945 atomic bombing, an event that profoundly influenced his creative philosophy, oriented towards simplicity, functionality, and resilience.
Miyake trained in Tokyo, graduating from Tama Art University in 1964, and continued his studies in Paris at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. There, he collaborated with prestigious fashion houses such as Guy Laroche and Givenchy, before moving to New York. Upon returning to Japan, he founded Studio Issey Miyake in 1970, launching a career that would redefine textile design and fashion.

One of his main innovations was the Pleats Please process, launched in the 1980s, which combined synthetic materials with permanent pleats, creating lightweight, comfortable, and versatile garments. Miyake also explored the use of technology, developing advanced materials such as A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) fabric, a revolutionary approach to creating garments from a single piece of cloth.
Miyake was not limited to fashion: in 1992, he launched the famous fragrance L’Eau d’Issey, a symbol of purity and minimalism. He was also known for designing Steve Jobs' characteristic black turtleneck, which became a cultural icon.
Despite his success, Miyake always maintained a humble approach, focusing on the idea of creating clothes "for people," capable of uniting aesthetics and functionality. His legacy lives on through his brand and his innovations, which continue to inspire the world of design.
