Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake pleated long-sleeve top

Issey Miyake was one of the greatest innovators of Japanese and international fashion, renowned for revolutionizing the concept of clothing through technological research, material experimentation, and essential design. Born in Hiroshima in 1938, he experienced the consequences of the atomic bombing as a child, an experience that profoundly influenced his creative sensibility. After studying graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo, he moved to Paris in 1965, where he worked at important maisons such as Guy Laroche and Givenchy, perfecting his training in the world of haute couture.

In 1970, he founded the Issey Miyake brand in Tokyo with the goal of creating innovative, functional, and accessible garments capable of combining craftsmanship, technology, and freedom of movement. From the very beginning, the designer stood out for his use of experimental materials and cutting-edge production techniques, developing an essential style inspired by art, architecture, and Japanese culture.

His international fame exploded in the eighties and nineties thanks to the iconic permanent pleats of the Pleats Please line, achieved through an exclusive processing method that made the garments lightweight, elastic, resistant, and easy to wear. Another fundamental innovation was the A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) project, which allowed for the creation of entire garments from a single piece of fabric, reducing waste and anticipating many principles of sustainable fashion.

Beyond clothing, Issey Miyake has left an indelible mark on the world of accessories, watches, and especially perfumes. Iconic fragrances such as L’Eau d’Issey, launched in 1992, have become great classics of contemporary perfumery thanks to their elegance and freshness.
