In Greek mythology, Hermes is the god of travelers, merchants, messengers, and cunning. He is the son of Zeus, king of the gods, and Maia, one of the Pleiades. From birth, he demonstrated extraordinary intelligence. According to myth, on the very day he was born, he left his cradle, found a herd of cattle belonging to Apollo, and stole them with great skill, making the animals walk backward to confuse the tracks.
When Apollo discovered the theft, he brought Hermes before Zeus. The young god denied everything with great confidence, but eventually confessed. To ask for forgiveness, he gave Apollo the lyre, a musical instrument he had constructed using a tortoise shell and strings. Apollo was so struck by the sound of the lyre that he accepted the gift and made peace with Hermes.
From that moment on, Hermes became the official messenger of the gods. He wore winged sandals and a helmet that allowed him to move swiftly between heaven, Earth, and the underworld. He carried the caduceus, a staff with two entwined serpents, a symbol of peace and harmony.
Hermes also had the task of accompanying the souls of the deceased to the underworld, guiding them to the realm of Hades. For this reason, he was considered the protector of travelers, both in the world of the living and the world of the dead.
In addition to being fast and intelligent, Hermes was famous for his ability to solve problems with cunning rather than force. He helped many heroes, including Perseus and Ulysses, offering advice and magical objects during their adventures.
