The story of the piece
Hermès
Hermès Dogon GM wallet in Togo leather
Hermès was founded in Paris in 1837 by Thierry Hermès as a workshop specializing in the creation of harnesses and saddles for horses. The maison built its reputation on artisanal excellence, becoming a benchmark for the European aristocracy in the production of equestrian goods. With the advent of modern means of transport, Hermès evolved, gradually transforming from a saddlery into a luxury brand dedicated to the art of travel.
At the end of the 19th century, under the leadership of Charles-Émile Hermès and subsequently his sons, the company introduced trunks, suitcases, and leather accessories, expanding its clientele and its offering. In 1922, the first women's bag was launched, signaling a new creative direction that responded to the aesthetic and functional needs of the era.
In 1937, the famous carré de soie were born, the iconic silk scarves with refined prints that would become a symbol of French elegance. In the post-war period, Hermès consolidated its identity through quality, discretion, and limited productions, characteristics that contribute to making it synonymous with authentic luxury.
Its bags became cult objects: the Kelly, made famous by Grace Kelly in the 1950s, and the Birkin, born in 1984 from the meeting between Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, embody the spirit of the brand, combining craftsmanship, functionality, and exclusivity.
Over the decades, Hermès has expanded into clothing, watchmaking, perfumery, and home décor, maintaining a creative continuity based on precious materials and manual craftsmanship. The aesthetic remains faithful to an understated luxury, where beauty lies in the details.
