The story of the piece
Gucci
Gucci Medium Monogram canvas and leather Messenger shoulder bag
The story of Gucci began in 1921 in Florence, when Guccio Gucci founded a small boutique specializing in high-quality leather goods and luggage. After working in London as a porter at luxury hotels, Guccio was fascinated by the elegant style of the international aristocracy and decided to bring that sophisticated aesthetic to Italy, blending it with Tuscan artisanal tradition.
During the 1930s and 40s, despite economic difficulties and restrictions due to World War II, Gucci demonstrated great adaptability and innovation. The scarcity of materials led to the use of alternative solutions such as hemp, linen, and bamboo. It was during this period that the famous Bamboo bag was born, destined to become one of the maison's most iconic symbols. At the same time, distinctive elements such as the green-red-green web stripe, inspired by the equestrian world, became established.
In the post-war era, Gucci experienced significant international expansion. Boutiques opened in Rome, Milan, and New York attracted celebrities, members of high society, and Hollywood stars. In the 1950s and 60s, the brand experienced its golden age, consolidating its identity with iconic creations such as the horsebit loafer and the GG monogram, which strengthened the brand's global recognition.
After the death of Guccio Gucci in 1953, family management led to internal tensions and conflicts which, over time, resulted in a loss of creative control and a progressive decline in the 1980s. The brand risked losing its prestige and exclusivity.
The rebirth occurred in the 1990s thanks to a profound corporate reorganization and a new creative vision. Gucci returned to the forefront of international fashion, reinterpreting its historical codes in a modern and bold way.
