The story of the piece

Burberry

Burberry cotton flared trousers

Burberry is an iconic British fashion maison founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, England. Originally specializing in outdoor clothing, the brand distinguished itself by creating functional and durable garments designed to withstand the British climate. In 1879, Burberry patented gabardine, an innovative, waterproof, and breathable fabric that revolutionized outdoor wear.

This garment became a symbol of style and elegance, maintaining a strong link to the brand's identity. In the 1930s, Burberry introduced its famous tartan pattern, a beige, black, white, and red check design, initially used as a lining for trench coats. This pattern has become a global icon of the brand.

Throughout the 20th century, Burberry consolidated its reputation, dressing explorers and celebrities, including aviator Amelia Earhart and actor Humphrey Bogart. In the 1990s, however, the brand went through a period of decline, associated with an outdated image.

The rebirth began with Christopher Bailey, creative director from 2001, and CEO Angela Ahrendts. Under their guidance, Burberry was transformed into a symbol of modern luxury, embracing digital and expanding its offering with clothing, accessories, and fragrances.

Today, Burberry is synonymous with British elegance and innovation, with the tartan pattern and the trench coat as timeless emblems. The brand continues to reinvent itself, celebrating its heritage and looking to the future with sustainable and cutting-edge collections.
