The story of the piece

Burberry

Burberry check rubber slippers

Burberry is a renowned British fashion maison founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, a young draper, in Basingstoke, England. Originally specializing in outdoor clothing, Burberry became famous for inventing gabardine, a durable, waterproof, and breathable fabric patented in 1888. This innovation revolutionized outdoor wear and solidified the brand's reputation for quality and innovation.

During World War I, the company developed the trench coat for British officers, a garment that became iconic due to its practicality and durability. After the war, the trench coat also became popular among civilians, transforming into a symbol of British elegance and style.

In the 1920s, Burberry introduced its characteristic tartan pattern, initially used as a lining for trench coats. This distinctive pattern has become one of the brand's most recognizable symbols and has contributed to its unique visual identity.

During the 20th century, Burberry dressed famous explorers such as Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole, and Ernest Shackleton on his Antarctic expeditions. This connection to adventure and exploration strengthened Burberry's image as a producer of functional, high-quality clothing.

In the 1990s, the brand faced challenges related to the perception of being a “mainstream” brand. However, under the creative direction of Christopher Bailey from 2001 to 2018, Burberry regained its prestige. Bailey renewed the brand's image, introducing a fusion of tradition and modernity, and focused on digitalization and real-time runway shows.

Today, under the leadership of Riccardo Tisci, Burberry continues to innovate while staying true to its British roots. The brand is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and for its collections that combine classic elegance with contemporary design. Burberry remains one of the most influential and respected fashion houses globally, synonymous with luxury, quality, and innovation.
