The story of the piece

Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent by Tom Ford polka dot sandals with wooden heel

Yves Saint Laurent is one of the most important and revolutionary figures in fashion history. Born in Oran, Algeria, in 1936, he showed an extraordinary passion for design and haute couture from a young age. At just seventeen, he moved to Paris to study at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, where his talent was immediately recognized.

In 1955, he joined the maison Dior as an assistant to Christian Dior. Following the sudden death of the designer in 1957, Yves Saint Laurent, only twenty-one years old, was appointed creative director of the maison. His early collections achieved enormous success, establishing him as one of the most promising talents in French fashion.

In 1961, together with his partner and business associate Pierre Bergé, he founded his own fashion house, Yves Saint Laurent. The new maison immediately stood out for its innovative vision of feminine elegance, capable of combining sophistication, modernity, and expressive freedom. Saint Laurent was among the first designers to understand the social changes of his time and translate them into creations that redefined the role of women in contemporary society.

Among his most famous inventions is "Le Smoking," introduced in 1966, a feminine evening suit inspired by menswear that became a symbol of emancipation and independence. The designer also introduced iconic pieces such as the safari jacket, the trouser suit, and sheer fabrics, contributing to the transformation of the female wardrobe.

His collections are often inspired by art and culture. His dresses dedicated to Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and other artistic figures who deeply influenced his work are legendary. Saint Laurent was also a pioneer of luxury prêt-à-porter thanks to the Rive Gauche line, launched in 1966.

After an extraordinary career spanning over forty years, Yves Saint Laurent retired in 2002. He passed away in 2008, leaving behind an immense legacy. Even today, he is considered one of the greatest designers of all time, capable of revolutionizing fashion through creativity, elegance, and innovation.
