The story of the piece
Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton Viva Cité GM Monogram canvas shoulder bag
Louis Vuitton was founded in 1854 in Paris by Louis Vuitton, a French artisan specializing in the creation of travel trunks. After working as an apprentice for a renowned luggage maker, Vuitton opened his first atelier in Rue Neuve-des-Capucines, near Place Vendôme. In an era marked by the expansion of rail and sea travel, his creations revolutionized the industry thanks to their practical, durable, and elegant designs.
Louis Vuitton introduced innovative trunks with a flat, waterproof structure that were easily stackable during travel, replacing traditional domed models. The maison's success grew rapidly among aristocrats, travelers, and members of European high society. After the founder's death in 1892, his son Georges Vuitton took over the company and created the famous LV monogram in 1896, alongside the iconic floral motifs, designed also to counter imitations.
Throughout the twentieth century, the brand expanded its production by introducing luxury bags, accessories, and leather goods destined to become symbols of international elegance. Historic models such as the Speedy, the Keepall, and the Neverfull won over celebrities and clients worldwide. In the eighties and nineties, the maison further consolidated its prestige by joining the LVMH group, the world leader in luxury.
The arrival of Marc Jacobs as creative director in 1997 marked a contemporary turning point with the launch of the first prêt-à-porter collections and innovative artistic collaborations. Subsequently, designers such as Nicolas Ghesquière and Virgil Abloh have reinterpreted the maison's identity by uniting tradition, fashion, and contemporary culture. Today, Louis Vuitton represents one of the most influential and recognizable brands in the world, synonymous with craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless luxury.
