The story of the piece

Jil Sander

Jil Sander Navy cotton midi dress

Jil Sander is a German fashion maison founded in 1968 in Hamburg by Heidemarie Jiline Sander, known as Jil Sander. After studying in Germany and the United States, and working as a fashion journalist, Sander launched her line with the goal of offering a minimalist, understated, and high-quality aesthetic.

Jil Sander Navy cotton midi dress In the 1970s and '80s, the brand established itself through its revolutionary approach: clean cuts, absence of ornamentation, neutral palettes, and luxurious materials. In stark contrast to the more decorative fashion of the era, Jil Sander became a pioneer of modern minimalism, winning over a refined and professional clientele, particularly female managers and entrepreneurs.

The true boom arrived in the 1990s, when her rigorous style became a symbol of intellectual and timeless elegance. The garments were constructed with almost architectural precision, the result of an extremely high level of tailoring. The maison represented a cultured and powerful alternative to the excess of fashion at the time.

In 1999, the brand was acquired by the Prada Group, marking the beginning of a turbulent phase with Jil Sander's departure and return several times between 2000 and 2013. After various creative directions, including Raf Simons (2005–2012) and Rodolfo Paglialunga, in 2017 the helm passed to Lucie and Luke Meier, who sensitively reinterpreted the brand's original spirit, combining rigor and delicacy.

Today, Jil Sander is synonymous with essential and sophisticated luxury. It represents timeless fashion that values the purity of forms, the excellence of materials, and independence of style. The brand continues to be appreciated for its quiet elegance and its indelible contribution to the culture of minimalism.
