The story of the piece
Gucci
Gucci Boat handbag in Monogram canvas and leather
Gucci is one of the most famous and prestigious fashion houses in the world, a symbol of luxury and the excellence of Made in Italy. Its history began in 1921, when Guccio Gucci founded a workshop in Florence specializing in the production of high-quality travel goods and leatherware. After working at the Hotel Savoy in London, Guccio drew inspiration from the elegance of the international aristocracy and decided to create refined accessories for an exclusive clientele.
In the 1930s and 40s, Gucci expanded its production by introducing handbags, suitcases, belts, and shoes made with precious materials and artisanal craftsmanship. During the period of restrictions due to the Second World War, the brand experimented with alternative materials, such as bamboo, giving rise to the famous Bamboo Bag, which remains one of the maison's symbols today.
In the 1950s and 60s, under the guidance of Guccio Gucci's sons, the company underwent rapid international expansion, opening boutiques in New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo. During this period, some of its distinctive elements were born, such as the horsebit and the green-red-green web, inspired by equestrian saddle straps. Celebrities such as Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy, and Audrey Hepburn helped make Gucci a style icon.
In the 1980s, the maison went through a period of crisis due to family conflicts and management difficulties. The rebirth came in the 1990s under the creative direction of Tom Ford, who profoundly renewed the brand's image, bringing it back to the heights of international fashion through a modern, sensual, and sophisticated style.
