In the 1930s, the brand expanded rapidly, opening boutiques in Madrid and Barcelona. Due to the Spanish Civil War, Cristóbal moved to Paris in 1937, where he inaugurated his haute couture maison. In the 1940s and 1950s, Balenciaga redefined fashion codes with new lines and innovative volumes. He introduced iconic pieces such as the baby doll dress, the sac dress, the cocoon coat, and the tunic, anticipating modern shapes that would influence generations of designers. His ability to sculpt fabric and construct garments like works of art earned him the admiration of colleagues like Christian Dior, who called him "the master of us all".

In 1968, Cristóbal Balenciaga closed the maison, believing that fashion was changing too rapidly compared to his values of artisanal perfection. After a long hiatus, the brand was relaunched in the 1980s and 1990s, progressively returning to the international scene.

A new era of great success arrived with Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director from 1997 to 2012, who modernized the maison's aesthetic. Subsequently, Demna has taken Balenciaga towards an even more contemporary and experimental dimension, blending luxury, streetwear, and provocation.
