The story of the piece
Goyard
Goyard Anjou Mini Goyardine canvas and leather bag
Goyard is one of the oldest and most mysterious luxury maisons in the world. Its origins date back to 1792, when Pierre-François Martin founded a workshop in Paris specializing in trunks and travel goods. In 1853, the business was taken over by François Goyard, who officially gave his name to the maison and defined its identity, built on artisanal savoir-faire, exclusivity, and total discretion.
Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Goyard became the brand of choice for the European aristocracy and the international upper bourgeoisie, creating custom trunks, travel accessories, and pet items. The maison gained fame for its ability to combine functionality, lightness, and durability through innovative materials and highly specialized craftsmanship.
One of the brand's most famous symbols is the Goyardine motif, introduced in 1892 by Edmond Goyard. It is a hand-painted chevron pattern with a three-dimensional effect, composed of small dots reminiscent of the wooden crates originally used by the Goyard family as rowers and transporters on the Yonne River. This motif became the maison's signature: elegant, discreet, and instantly recognizable.
Unlike many contemporary fashion houses, Goyard still maintains a philosophy based on absolute privacy: no runway shows, no advertising campaigns, and few interviews. Attention is focused exclusively on craftsmanship, personalization, and the direct relationship with the client. The famous hand-painted initials and decorations make every creation unique.
In 1998, entrepreneur Jean-Michel Signoles acquired the maison and relaunched its global image without betraying its values of tradition and exclusivity.
