The story of the piece
Christian Dior
Christian Dior Dway logo jacquard fabric sandals
Christian Dior (1905–1957) was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century and the founder of the celebrated maison Dior. Born in Granville, Normandy, he came from a wealthy family that envisioned a diplomatic career for him. However, Dior cultivated a strong passion for art from a young age and opened a gallery in Paris, where he exhibited works by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. The economic crisis of the 1930s forced him to close the gallery and pursue a career in fashion, starting as an illustrator and later collaborating with major designers.
In 1946, with the support of entrepreneur Marcel Boussac, he founded Maison Dior in Paris. The following year, he presented his first collection, which revolutionized the fashion world. The silhouettes were characterized by cinched waists, soft shoulders, and full skirts, in stark contrast to the austere clothing of the wartime period. This collection was dubbed the "New Look" by the American press, a name destined to go down in fashion history.
Success was immediate and international. Dior transformed Paris into the post-war world capital of haute couture and developed an innovative brand, expanding production to include perfumes, accessories, and commercial licenses. His vision helped make fashion a global phenomenon and a major economic sector.
Christian Dior died suddenly in 1957, at the age of 52, during a holiday in Italy. After his passing, the creative direction of the maison was entrusted to the young Yves Saint Laurent, who continued the founder's legacy. In the following years, other great designers, including Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri, have reinterpreted the Dior style, keeping its identity alive.
