The story of the piece
Balenciaga
Balenciaga Cagole leather flat sandals
Balenciaga was founded in 1917 by Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga in San Sebastián, Spain. From the very beginning, the couturier distinguished himself through excellent sartorial mastery, so much so that he was described by Christian Dior as "the master of us all." His creations revolutionized fashion through innovative volumes, architectural lines, and an essential elegance that broke the patterns of the era.
In the 1930s, due to the Spanish Civil War, Balenciaga moved the maison to Paris, where he quickly conquered European high society. During the 1950s and 1960s, he introduced silhouettes that became iconic, such as the sack dress, the baby doll, and sculptural coats. His refined and minimalist style profoundly influenced the evolution of international haute couture.
Following the retirement of Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1968 and his death in 1972, the brand underwent a long period of transformation. In the 1990s, the maison was relaunched with new creative directions, eventually becoming one of the most influential brands in contemporary luxury.
Since 2001, Kering has acquired Balenciaga and supported its global growth. Designers such as Nicolas Ghesquière and Demna have reinterpreted the maison's heritage with a modern and provocative style, blending haute couture, streetwear, and experimentation. Oversized sneakers, deconstructed silhouettes, and innovative campaigns have transformed the brand into a global cultural phenomenon.
Today, Balenciaga represents a perfect balance between couture tradition and contemporary avant-garde, keeping the revolutionary vision of its founder alive.
