In the fashion world, it has become common to witness collaborations between the most famous brands and artists from various fields: painters, sculptors, and even figures from the worlds of entertainment and music, who bring their unique vision to create pieces that become true icons.
For the S/S 2008 accessories collection, Marc Jacobs, then artistic director of Louis Vuitton, launched an exceptional and surprising creative collaboration with the American neo-pop artist Richard Prince. The artist is one of the most influential and discussed of contemporary times, known for his famous appropriation technique, the practice of taking images from others—often from advertisements, magazines, or commercial photography—and incorporating them into his artworks.
For the collaboration with Richard Prince, Marc Jacobs worked on the women's accessories collection, which was a succession of countless citations and references to the artist's work; the accessories themselves become true works of art, the result of the creative genius of this extraordinary duo.
Richard Prince became famous for his series of 19 paintings titled “Nurses”, featuring mysterious nurses wearing caps and surgical masks inspired by the covers of a vintage series of pulp novels. As a tribute to the famous “Nurses” painting series, Marc Jacobs sent twelve supermodels down the runway, each carrying an extraordinary bag from the Monogram series. Richard Prince worked on two bag models: Monogram Jokes and Monogram Watercolour. Each Monogram Jokes bag features, via screen printing, the famous “jokes” used by Richard Prince in his paintings—witty lines that recount anecdotes from his life. The Monogram Watercolour bags, instead, are characterized by a monochromatic background and the famous Louis Vuitton logo printed as if created with a watercolor technique: an example is the Speedy 35 bag available on the La Belle Époque Boutique website.
