The history of the Fendi Baguette: a timeless icon

Born in 1997, it immediately became a timeless icon. In this article, you can discover the history of the Fendi Baguette.

The Fendi Baguette is undoubtedly one of the most famous and recognizable bags when it comes to luxury accessories. Its history began in the '90s, and since then, this model has undergone various reinterpretations and relaunches, without ever losing that It Bag vibe that made it famous and beloved by women worldwide.

Born in 1997 from the combined vision of Silvia Venturini Fendi, then creative director of Fendi accessories, and Karl Lagerfeld, the Baguette was presented as a bag with clean, essential lines, featuring a very short handle that allowed it to be carried right under the arm, echoing the typically French gesture that gave the model its name.

The Baguette was an immediate success, but its true consecration came thanks to a very popular TV series in those years, Sex and the City. Fendi's marketing team thought of lending a bag to be used by the protagonist Carrie in one episode, and the idea proved brilliant: in the episode in question, Carrie is robbed by a thief while walking through the streets of New York and, responding to the criminal demanding she hand over the bag, says a phrase that would become iconic: “It’s not a bag, it’s a Baguette!”. The model the protagonist carried under her arm was a purple sequined Baguette, and the robbery scene became one of the most searched of all time.

Subsequently, many celebrities were photographed with a Baguette under their arm, including Naomi Campbell and Paris Hilton, two fashion icons of the early 2000s, officially establishing that the bag had become a true “It Bag”. The pink lizard version worn by Paris, paired with a low-cut white top and her beloved Aviator sunglasses, was extremely famous: a look with a Y2K feel that is still super current.

Over the years, the Fendi maison has experimented extensively with this model, playing with different materials and fabrics (it has also been proposed in crocodile, fur, lizard, denim, and pony skin) and making every piece unique through the use of embellishments such as sequins, fringes, and crystals. Numerous collaborations have also taken place, such as the one with the Fondazione Lisio, which we discussed in one of our articles, and which gave rise to the silk and velvet model, available on our website.

The brand's designers also modified the bag's dimensions, introducing the Baguette Micro and Nano, reducing the size of the It Bag until it became a small pochette. This year, however, the Mamma Baguette was relaunched on the runway, a larger version with softer shapes. Dedicated to Adele Fendi, one of the brand's founders, this model is beloved by younger generations and is perfect for everyday life.

In short, when it comes to the Fendi Baguette, there is truly something for everyone: whatever your favorite color, whether you prefer it for day or evening, whether you want it simple or heavily decorated, you will surely find the Baguette that is right for you!
