Jil Sander is a German designer born in 1943 in Hamburg, considered one of the most influential figures in contemporary fashion. After studying textile engineering and working as a fashion journalist in the United States, she opened her first boutique in Hamburg in 1968. This experience led to the creation of the Jil Sander brand, officially founded in 1968.

From the very beginning, Jil Sander stood out for an essential, refined style devoid of superfluous decoration. Her collections offered clean lines, neutral colours, and high-quality materials, giving rise to what is now defined as "luxury minimalism." Her approach represented a turning point from the fashion of the Seventies and Eighties, which was characterised by excess and bright colours.

In the Eighties and Nineties, the brand achieved international success, expanding into Europe, Asia, and the United States. In addition to womenswear, the brand introduced menswear collections, accessories, and fragrances, consolidating its reputation as a symbol of modern elegance and artisanal quality.

In 1999, Jil Sander sold the majority of the company to the Italian Prada Group, but the relationship with the new ownership was complex, leading to several periods of departure and return to creative direction. Following her definitive retirement, the brand continued to evolve under the guidance of various creative directors, while maintaining its identity founded on simplicity, sartorial precision, and timeless elegance.
