The story of the piece

Gucci

Gucci Blondie Small Monogram canvas and leather bag

The history of Gucci is one of the most iconic in the world of Italian and international fashion. The brand was born in Florence in 1921, founded by Guccio Gucci, who, after working in London as a porter at the Savoy Hotel, became fascinated by the elegance of its aristocratic clientele. Upon returning to Italy, he opened a leather goods workshop specializing in handmade luggage and luxury items, utilizing Tuscan artisanal craftsmanship.

Gucci Blondie Small Monogram canvas and leather bag. In the 1930s and '40s, due to economic sanctions, Gucci began using alternative materials such as hemp, linen, and bamboo, introducing the famous bamboo handle, which became one of the brand's symbols. After the Second World War, the company expanded and opened stores in Rome and Milan, conquering an international clientele.

In the 1950s and '60s, under the leadership of Guccio's sons, especially Aldo and Rodolfo Gucci, the brand became synonymous with luxury and status symbols, embraced by celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy (from whom the famous Jackie bag originated).

In the 1980s, the family was torn apart by internal power struggles for control of the company, culminating in 1995 with the murder of Maurizio Gucci, the founder's grandson, at the behest of his wife Patrizia Reggiani.

In the meantime, ownership passed to external investors and the brand was relaunched by Tom Ford in the '90s, whose provocative and modern style brought Gucci back to the center of the global fashion scene.

Today Gucci is part of the Kering group (formerly PPR) and continues to be one of the most influential luxury brands in the world. Under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele (from 2015 to 2022) and then Sabato De Sarno, the brand has successfully fused artisanal tradition, innovation, and pop culture, keeping its heritage of elegance and audacity alive.
